Specialty Units

A large respiratory team is present in a variety of specialty units:

  • Cardiac surgery intensive care/coronary care unit
  • Surgical intensive care unit
  • Medical intensive care unit
  • Burn center
  • ICU/surgical intermediate care unit
  • Trauma unit
  • Pediatric intensive care unit
  • Neonatal intensive care unit
  • Emergency department
  • ShandsCair flight team
  • Operating room
  • Hyperbaric chamber
  • Pulmonary diagnostic lab


Some of these units can serve up to 26 ventilated patients per day, challenging our therapists to have exposure to a variety of procedures:

  • Aerosol treatments
  • Bedside bronchoscopy
  • Blood gas testing
  • Chest tube insertion
  • CPT
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Transporting mechanically ventilated patients
  • Ventilator management
